witperch is a humorous AI dictionary. You type a word, you get a joke definition. There are no accounts and no sign-up, so we hold very little about you — this page explains exactly what, and why.

Who we are

witperch is operated by Mobiglance SRL, a company registered in Romania (registration number 49970612). For the purposes of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), we are the data controller for the limited personal data described below. What we process, and why

We deliberately collect as little as possible. When you use witperch:

• Your search word. When a word isn't already in our cache, the word you typed is sent to our AI provider (OpenAI) to generate a definition, which we then store. The stored definition is keyed by the word itself, not by you. Words are also recorded in our server logs so we can see what's popular and which words to add next.
• Technical request data (server logs). Each request to our API is logged with: a hashed form of your IP address, the word searched, a timestamp, the response status and timing, and AI usage/cost figures. We use this to run the service — rate-limiting and abuse prevention, monitoring cost, fixing errors, and improving the word corpus.

We never store your raw IP address. IP addresses are hashed with SHA-256 and a salt that rotates every day, so the hash can't be reversed to an IP and can't be linked across days. We rely on this hash purely to count requests per source for rate-limiting; we don't use it to identify or profile you.

Legal basis (GDPR): our legitimate interests in operating, securing, and improving the service (Art. 6(1)(f)). The data involved is minimal and pseudonymised.

Cookies

witperch sets no tracking or advertising cookies, and at launch sets no cookies at all. Because of that, no cookie-consent banner is required. If that ever changes (for example if we add a tool that uses cookies), we'll update this policy and add a consent banner first.

Analytics

We do not currently use any third-party web analytics, and we do not track you across other sites. If we add analytics, we will use a cookieless, privacy-friendly tool (e.g. Plausible) that does not store your IP address or use cross-site identifiers, and we will update this page.

Bot & abuse protection

We rate-limit requests by hashed IP to keep the service available and to stop automated abuse, and we cap daily AI usage. We do not currently run third-party bot-detection scripts.

Who we share data with

We don't sell your data. We use a small number of service providers ("processors") to run witperch:

• OpenAI — generates definitions from the word you search. Under OpenAI's API terms, inputs sent via the API are not used to train its models.
• Google Cloud / Firebase — hosting, our database, file storage for share images, and server logs. Hosted in the United States (see "International transfers").

International transfers

Our hosting, database, and logs are located in the United States (Google Cloud, US multi-region). If you are in the EU/EEA, the limited data above is therefore transferred to the US. That transfer relies on Google Cloud's Standard Contractual Clauses and certification under the EU–US Data Privacy Framework, which provide an approved safeguard for such transfers.

How long we keep it

• Server logs (including hashed IPs): retained for 30 days, then deleted.
• Cached definitions (the word and its generated definition): kept indefinitely as part of the dictionary. These contain no personal data.

Your rights

Under the GDPR you have the right to access, rectify, erase, restrict or object to the processing of your personal data, and to data portability. You can exercise these by emailing contact@mobiglance.com; we aim to respond within 30 days.

In practice, because we keep no accounts and only hashed IPs in 30-day logs, we usually hold no information that identifies you, which can limit our ability to locate data about a specific person. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority — in Romania, the National Supervisory Authority for Personal Data Processing (ANSPDCP).

Children

witperch is not directed at children under 16 and we do not knowingly collect their personal data.

Reporting a definition

Definitions are AI-generated jokes and can occasionally be wrong, odd, or offensive. To ask us to review or remove one, email contact@mobiglance.com with the word, and we'll take a look.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the service evolves. Material changes will be reflected in the "Last updated" date above.
